Cabinet Refacing in St. George, UT

St. George Cabinet Makers passes your request to an independent cabinet maker in town for cabinet refacing, the job that keeps your existing boxes and replaces everything you see. The face frames and exposed end panels get a new skin of wood veneer, thermofoil or laminate; the doors and drawer fronts are replaced outright in solid wood, veneered panels or painted MDF; and new concealed hinges, pulls and often soft-close slides go on with them. Done on sound boxes, it changes the look of a kitchen in days without tearing out the counters or the plumbing.

Wood Veneer Refacing

Wood veneer refacing covers the face frames and visible cabinet sides in a thin sheet of real wood, then hangs new doors to match. HomeGuide describes veneer as a thin layer sliced from the log in a peeling motion. It puts veneer refacing at $100 to $250 per linear foot, or $2,500 to $8,000 for an average kitchen, and says solid wood veneer costs two to four times as much as laminate but is more durable and scratch-resistant. Species choice works the same way as on new cabinets, so oak, maple, cherry and walnut are all on the table. One thing to ask: when a door's front is solid wood and the frame around it is veneer, will the two be finished in the same pass so the color matches? Wood darkens or lightens with light over the years, and a mismatch shows most on a sunny wall.

Thermofoil and Laminate Refacing

Thermofoil and laminate are the budget end. HomeGuide prices them at $80 to $125 per linear foot, $2,000 to $4,000 for an average kitchen. Laminate is water-resistant and comes in solid colors and wood looks, but it can chip on impact. Thermofoil is a PVC vinyl film heat- and vacuum-pressed over an MDF door, which gives a smooth face with no joints that looks painted. It only comes as a one-piece door, so true five-piece construction isn't an option. Its weak point is heat. Deslaurier, a cabinet manufacturer, warns that heavy steam or heat can make thermofoil melt, peel or blister, and that heat shields beside an oven reduce the damage without preventing it. Once a thermofoil skin lifts, it can't be pressed back, so the door gets replaced. Keep it away from the oven and the dishwasher's steam vent.

Door and Drawer-Front Replacement

The lightest version of the job replaces only the doors and drawer fronts and leaves the frames alone. HomeGuide puts it at $180 to $330 per door installed, or $2,200 to $6,600 for a kitchen. It works when the frames are in good shape and the new doors are painted or close in color to them. The hinges often change too. If your current doors are partial overlay, moving to full-overlay doors means concealed hinges, which HomeGuide says that style requires. New pulls are cheapest when they match the old hole spacing, HomeGuide says, but a new door has no holes yet, so this is the moment to pick hardware freely. Ask whether the drawer boxes and slides stay. Old drawer boxes behind new fronts are fine if they run smoothly; soft-close slides can be added at the same time.

Painted MDF Shaker Doors

Painted MDF shaker doors turn an oak kitchen into a painted one without stripping the old finish off every door. MDF machines cleanly and takes paint smoothly, which is why the USDA Wood Handbook lists it as a stand-in for solid wood in furniture and door skins. A one-piece MDF shaker door, routed from a single panel, has no joints to crack open in dry air, unlike a five-piece painted wood door. Shaker doors run $60 to $80 apiece in materials on HomeGuide's list, before finishing and hanging. The risk is water. MDF swells when it gets wet and doesn't fully recover, per the Composite Panel Association, so a chip in the paint at the sink base or beside the dishwasher can let a door edge swell. Ask for a sprayed, catalyzed finish on all six faces, including the back and edges.

Cabinet Refacing Cost Against Painting, Refinishing and New Boxes

All figures are national published estimates.

Option HomeGuide Angi
Painting existing cabinets $2,000-$6,500 $180-$3,200
Refinishing (strip, stain or clear) $1,500-$4,500 $2,000-$7,000
Replacing doors and drawer fronts only $2,200-$6,600 n/a
Refacing $150-$450 per linear foot; $5,000-$13,000 for a 100-200 sq ft kitchen $4,000-$13,500; $7,234 average
Full cabinet replacement $4,500-$15,000 n/a

HomeGuide puts labor at 50% to 70% of a refacing bill. A kitchen with 30 linear feet of cabinets comes to roughly $4,500 to $13,500 at its per-foot range (our arithmetic). Above the laminate and veneer bands described earlier, solid wood doors with veneered boxes run $200 to $500 a foot. Note that the top of the refacing range overlaps the bottom of new cabinets. Door count matters as much as footage: a kitchen with 25 doors and drawer fronts at HomeGuide's $180 to $330 per door comes to $4,500 to $8,250 for doors alone (our arithmetic), before any veneer goes on the frames. If your quote lands near the top, it's worth pricing new custom boxes too; the per-foot figures for those are on custom kitchen cabinets.

Cabinet Refacing Candidates: Check the Boxes First

Refacing only makes sense on boxes worth keeping, and the homepage covers the broader reface-or-replace decision. Before you get quotes, open the sink base and look at the bottom panel and the toe kick. Swollen, crumbly particleboard there won't shrink back, according to the Composite Panel Association, and no veneer will fix it. Check that drawers run and that face frames are glued tight, not loose at the joints. If one or two boxes are bad, a cabinet maker can rebuild those and reface the rest; cabinet repair covers that work. If the doors are solid wood and you like their shape, cabinet refinishing and painting costs less.

Dry air matters for refacing too. HomeGuide notes that frequent temperature and moisture swings can make veneer and laminate expand and contract until they crack or warp. Solid-wood doors made at a damper shop's moisture level shrink once they're hung here, which is covered in detail on the entertainment centers page. Ask the maker how long the doors sit in the shop before finishing, and whether the veneer is wood-backed or paper-backed.

Refacing also involves sanding or scuffing old painted frames. In a home built before 1978, that falls under the EPA's lead-safe renovation rule, explained on the refinishing page. It affects few houses here, since only about 9% of St. George's homes were built before 1980.

What a Cabinet Refacing Quote Should List

  • Door and drawer-front material and style

: solid wood, veneered panel, painted MDF or thermofoil, and the profile.
  • Face-frame and end-panel covering

: species and type of veneer or laminate, and whether end panels get a new applied panel.
  • Finish

: sprayed, catalyzed, and on which faces.
  • Hinges

: make, model and overlay, and soft-close or not.
  • Drawers

: new fronts only, or new boxes and slides as well.
  • Hardware

: pulls and knobs supplied by whom, and drilled to what spacing.
  • Trim

: crown, light rail and toe-kick covering.
  • Schedule and cleanup

: days on site (HomeGuide's estimate is 2 to 5) and haul-off of the old doors.

The maker you're referred to measures every opening before ordering, since replacement doors are sized to the frames you have, not to a catalog.

Frequently asked questions

Is cabinet refacing cheaper than painting?

No, painting costs less. Angi's 2026 figures put painting at $180 to $3,200 and refinishing at $2,000 to $7,000, against $4,000 to $13,500 for refacing. Refacing costs more because the doors and drawer fronts are new. It's the better buy when the doors themselves are worn, warped or a style you can't paint your way out of.

How long does cabinet refacing last?

HomeGuide says professionally applied refacing veneers last 15 to 30 years with proper care. Water, cooking smoke and grease dull the surface over time, and moisture and temperature swings can crack or lift veneer and laminate, so the areas beside the range, sink and dishwasher tend to show wear first. The new doors last as long as their material does.

How long does it take to reface kitchen cabinets?

HomeGuide's estimate is 2 to 5 days on site, depending on the size of the kitchen and the number of cabinets. Making the doors and drawer fronts happens before that, in the shop, after the maker measures every opening. Counters, sink and appliances normally stay where they are.

Is thermofoil a good choice for refacing?

It's the cheapest door option, about $80 to $125 per linear foot by HomeGuide's estimate, and it wipes clean. The trade-off is heat: thermofoil is a vinyl skin on MDF, and steam or oven heat can make it peel or blister. Heat shields beside the oven help but don't guarantee it, and peeled thermofoil can't be pressed back down.

Can I replace just the cabinet doors?

Yes. HomeGuide puts door replacement alone at $180 to $330 per door with labor, or $2,200 to $6,600 for a kitchen. The catch is the face frames and end panels, which keep their old finish. If the new doors are a different wood or color, the frames will show around them, and that's where full refacing comes in.
